Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The manuscript has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Narrative reviews

The narrative reviews will only be considered if the Editor-in-Chief invites them.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses

Systematic reviews in accordance with PRISMA guidelines (checklist should be submitted along with manuscript file) are welcomed without invitation by the Editor-in-Chief.

Research articles

This type includes full-length research papers. Although there is no fixed length, articles should be as concise as possible and provide sufficient information for the work to be repeated and for the claims of the authors to be judged by the readers. Following relevant reporting guidelines is highly encouraged.

Technical notes

Technical notes are short articles giving a brief description of a specific development, technique, or procedure, or they may describe a modification of an existing technique, procedure, or device applicable to laboratory medicine.

Short communications

Short communications are concise articles (no more than 1,500 words) that aim to report new ideas, significant improvements to existing methods, a new practical application, or a new tool or resource. Short communications do not cover in detail background information about the problems treated; rather they provide key pointers to the reader. The work reported needs to be technically sound, innovative, and significantly unique, advancing the state of the art. Short communication is not intended to publish preliminary results.

Letters to the Editor

Letters to the Editor may comment on recently published BDA articles, novel cases or topics of current interest to the public. The letter should be concise and to the point, with a maximum of 1000 words and 2 authors. Letters commenting on previously published articles must be received within 6 months of publication of the relevant article.
